Irving HS:

Salutatorian encourages parents to show children that learning is fun

Irving High School salutatorian Silvia Casarez Alvarez, the daughter of Gilberto and Maria Casarez, will attend University of Texas at Dallas next fall.

She chose UT Dallas because it has a good engineering program, and its acceptance rate to medical school is high.

“My mom is my role model because she raised me by herself, and I believe that she did an outstanding job,” Alvarez said. “I hope one day I can provide her with all the things she has provided me.

“Since I was in elementary school, my now deceased brother encouraged me to get the highest grades I could get. He is my motivation.”

She said parents can help their children achieve top honors.

“I believe that if you start teaching a child how amazing learning new things is, they will grow [up] liking it,” Alvarez said.

Alvarez received the Academic Excellence Scholarship that will pay for her tuition and books. She also earned the Inelda Alaniz $1,000 Scholarship.
