BELLEVUE, WA — After a competitive weekend of head-to-head Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG) battles, Christian Martinez joins an elite group of competitors to earn a top spot at the 2017/2018 Pokémon Regional Championships. Held in Daytona Beach, FL on Oct. 7 and 8, thousands of fans and supporters were in attendance as the Irving native clinched 3rd place in the TCG Senior Division.
Along with the top finish, Christian also took home a portion of up to $50,000 in cash prizes, scholarships, and merchandise awarded at the event as well as valuable Championship Points that count toward a potential invite to the 2018 Pokémon World Champions in Nashville, TN next summer. Drawing more than 850 competitors, the Daytona Beach Pokémon Regional Championships is one of only 15 regional-level tournaments taking place across North America this season and is an important step for players in an often year-long journey to earn an invitation to the Pokémon World Championships.
“The Pokémon Regional Championships provide a great opportunity for players of all ages to come together, build friendships, and compete in a game they are passionate about,” said J.C. Smith, senior director of Consumer Marketing for The Pokémon Company International. “Thank you to the players for continuing to display great sportsmanship and competitive spirit throughout the tournament, and a special congratulations to the top finishers!”
Each year, the Pokémon Organized Play tournament series draws more than 450,000 Pokémon players to compete at various local league events and sanctioned tournaments throughout North America. Players of all ages and skill levels in good standing are encouraged to participate in Play! Pokémon and the hundreds of family-friendly events that take place each year.
