Nimitz, Irving Academic Decathlon Teams Advance in Competition

Irving – The Nimitz Academic Decathlon won its 26th Regional Championship by edging Flower Mound Marcus, Hebron High School, and Irving High School in a tightly contested meet on Feb. 7-8. The point totals for the top four teams were as follows:

Nimitz students won 40 medals in the meet, led by Juan Gonzalez with 9 medals and Alan Ta with 8. Jessica Aguilera contributed 7 medals, Karen Garcia won 6, and Melanie Chapman chipped in with 4.

Alan Ta was the top-scoring Viking with over 8700 points, making him the #3 A student in the meet. His fellow A-student, Melanie Chapman, was Nimitz’ second highest scoring student.

Jessica Aguilera was the meet’s #2 B student, Karen Garcia was the #5 C student, and for the second consecutive year, Juan Gonzalez was the top scoring C student in the region. Juan became only the 6th student in the 36 year history of Nimitz Academic Decathlon to win back-to-back individual regional championships. Ryan Truong, Rodrigo Betancourt, Walter Herrera, and Dayana Lopez also made major contributions to the victory.

The Vikings’ point total ranks 4th in the state among 6A schools as both the Nimitz and Irving teams move on to the State Meet in San Antonio, March 6-8.

This marks the 33rd consecutive year that Nimitz has advanced to the State Meet.
