Grand Prairie Approves Ordinance Giving Enforceability of Disaster Orders

Grand Prairie — In the wake of social distancing and other guidelines, the city of Grand Prairie held its first entirely virtual city council meeting as if business were normal.

During the consent agenda portion, which the council unanimously approved, one of the items included an ordinance amending the Chapter 12, “Fire Protection and Emergency Management.”

This provides an amendment which “adds and identifies enforceable penalties for the failure to comply with valid mandatory emergency orders that may be issued during a declared disaster to avoid increased risks to the health and safety of the public.”

The full ordinance says that “a person commits an offense if the person fails to obey the lawful order of a peace officer during a federal, state, county, or locally declared disaster when said lawful order was given in relation to enforcing a disaster order” and violations are considered a misdemeanor.
