Police investigate child’s death

Grand Prairie—The Grand Prairie Police Department (GPPD) is investigating the death of a three-year-old child that occurred on Wednesday, May 15.

Officers responded to Arlington Memorial Hospital On Saturday, May 11, at approximately 8:30 a.m., after medical staff contacted GPPD regarding a child who was transported by family members to the emergency room with what appeared to be injuries caused by an assault. Due to the severity of the injuries, the child was flown by air ambulance to Cook Childrens Hospital in Fort Worth for treatment.

The child later succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased by medical staff on May 15.

During the course of the investigation, Detectives determined the child had been physically assaulted at his residence, located in the 1000 block of N. Highway 360, prior to being transported to the hospital. On May 11 at around 4:30 p.m., detectives placed Solnifasint Nelson, 21 years of age, under arrest for Injury to Child Causing Serious Bodily Injury or

Death, a first-degree felony. Nelson is the stepfather of the deceased child.

Upgraded charges on Nelson may be forthcoming pending the results of additional medical exams on the deceased child.

This case remains an active investigation.
