Scholars celebrate academic excellence

Irving—Irving ISD hosted the inaugural AP Scholars Night at Irving High School on Thursday, Sept. 19. A record-breaking 359 students earned distinctions from The College Board for their outstanding performance on AP exams during the 2023-2024 school year, with more than 200 students recognized at the event.

The event celebrated students from Irving, MacArthur and Nimitz High Schools, and Singley Academy. Scholars were categorized by their AP coursework performance and ability to maintain strong GPAs as follows:

Seminar & Research Certificate: Granted to students who earn scores of 3 or higher in both AP Seminar and AP Research. 

Capstone Diploma: Granted to students who earn scores of 3 or higher in AP Seminar, AP Research and on four additional AP Exams of their choosing

AP Scholars: Granted to students who earn scores of 3 or higher on three or more AP Exams

Scholars with Honors: Granted to students who earn an average score of at least 3.25 on all AP Exams taken and scores of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams

Scholars with Distinctions: Granted to students who earn an average score of at least 3.5 on all AP Exams taken and scores of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams

The Irving ISD Gifted and Talented/Advanced Academics team emphasized the importance of this event as a platform to showcase the district’s achievements and foster community involvement.

“For over a decade, Irving ISD has paved the way in creating educational equity by being able to provide access to college-level coursework for our diverse student population through participation in Advanced Placement courses,” Luis Gonzalez, Irving ISD PreK-12 Gifted/Advanced Academics coordinator, said. “We are incredibly proud of our students’ dedication and commitment to being college- and career-ready, so we felt it was imperative to celebrate our AP Scholars with a special night and set the tone for the new school year. We hope that this event motivates all our students to challenge themselves, work hard and dream big.”
