Books on CD to be removed from collection

January 17, 2025

Coppell—In January 2025, the books on CD and mp3 discs will no longer be a part of the adult collection. Adult audiobooks will be available through the cloudLibrary app for listening through phones, Bluetooth speakers, tablets, or computers.

cloudLibrary offers over 25,000 unique digital audiobook titles. Anyone with a valid Coppell Public Library card may borrow digital books and audiobooks from cloudLibrary.

CD and mp3 discs are no longer sustainable for the library for a few reasons.

Lack of Availability: Major publishers have transitioned to offering almost exclusively digital audiobooks, meaning the physical discs are no longer available for purchase. This affects not only our ability to grow the collection, but the maintenance of the current collection: replacement discs and copies of older titles are not available, either. This in turn affects the quality of our patron experience, as we can no longer assure that the items available are in good condition.

Decline in Use: Physical audiobooks, not including the children's collection, currently account for only 0.3 percent of the library's circulation, with around 1,200 checkouts in the past year. Meanwhile, the digital audiobooks are checked out over 2,500 times per month.

The children's collection will still have titles available on CD and mp3, as well as read-alongs (books with attached audio readers).

Patrons who want to use CDs can borrow books on CD from other libraries through the Interlibrary Loan program.

Some audiobooks, once withdrawn, will be available in the Senior Center's informal library. A selection of audiobooks will be available on the library's paperback exchange shelves near the Quiet Reading Room.

Patrons with visual, physical, or reading disabilities can access the Talking Book Program, part of the National Library Service for the Blind and Print Disabled.

Digital audiobooks offer a simple and easy way to listen to your favorite books. No need to switch discs while driving or deal with a scratched or missing disc. cloudLibrary automatically picks up where you left off, even if you change devices. You can also access the collection 24/7 so you can always start your next listen right away.

Patrons can check out up to 7 titles at a time and place holds on up to 7 titles. Create a saved list to keep track of even more titles. Patrons can find previous checkouts with a history tab and browse popular and trending titles. Only want to listen to books on cloudLibrary? Filter out the eBooks so that you only see the audiobooks. Download the audiobooks to your device to listen without using WIFI or data.

Download the app and login with your library card and password/PIN to access your account. If you don't know your password/PIN call or stop by for help. Patrons can access the cloudLibrary app through phones, tablets including the Kinde Fire, and computers. However, cloudLibrary is not compatible with the Kindle Paperwhite. Patrons may call or stop by the library anytime during open hours for assistance with your cloudLibrary account.
