Cedar Hill—Collegiate Academy & High School teaching colleagues Khawonda Crawford and Shandria Russell earned a $10,000 Cedar Hill ISD Education Foundation (CHEF) Grant that will help scholars in both English and Computer Science.

“We brainstormed to find an area that crossed between our two subject areas,” Russell, an English teacher, said.

The title of the grant is “From Essay to Algorithm: Fostering Problem Solving and Communication through Writing and Coding.” The grant will provide curriculum and iPads for scholars, plus Advanced Placement training for teachers.

It was one of just two $10,000 CHEF Grants awarded last month and the largest grant that Russell and Crawford, a computer science teacher, have earned in their combined 24 years with CHISD.

“This grant will help scholars with writing code and essays,” Crawford said. “It makes it fresh and new for them.”

In the past, Crawford and Russell earned CHEF mini-grants and in 2017-2018, they earned a grant so Collegiate Academy Middle School scholars could host a newscast.
